FAQ’S
-
When you arrive, you are welcomed into a comfortable and supportive space, offered tea or water and a cozy seat. Our first session includes reviewing informed consent and confidentiality. I also want to seek to understand your specific needs and preferences so that I can tailor my therapeutic approach.
-
When you book an appointment, it is exclusively reserved for you. Please know that I commit time preparing for your session. Hence, if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please inform me 48 hours in advance.
You will be charged half the session fee if you cancel or miss your appointment without giving the 48-hour notice.
-
Your extended healthcare provider may cover a portion or all of your counselling fees. It is recommended that you confirm with your healthcare provider. Some extended health plans which are known to cover Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) in BC are:
· Great West Life
· Greenshield
· Sunlife
· Pacific Blue Cross
New Heights Counselling does not direct bill to extended health plans. Clients receive a detailed receipt of their appointment that can be easily submitted to their health plan for prompt reimbursement.

Clients can book appointments weekly, bi-weekly or monthly at their convenience. Although regular appointments are recommended, the frequency of sessions can be adjusted to accommodate fluctuating schedules. The duration of therapy depends on the individual's intention for therapy. Short-term therapy typically involves 6-12 sessions that focus on practical solutions. Long-term therapy, on the other hand, involves 12 or more sessions that aim to address longstanding patterns and greater self-awareness. Ultimately, the decision is up to the client, and they are free to change the frequency of sessions or discontinue therapy at any time.
-
Expressing oneself without fear of judgement in a safe environment can be therapeutic and help individuals confront their true feelings. While talking to friends and family can be comforting, consulting with a professional therapist can provide a unique perspective and effective tools to address specific issues. As a therapist, I strive to provide unbiased feedback by actively listening to clients. Individuals can feel more comfortable and confident when working with a counsellor, which can lead to increased self-awareness, self-esteem, and positive coping strategies. Ultimately, the goal is to help clients gain clarity and solve problems by reframing their thoughts and emotions.
-
It's worth noting that experiencing a longer session can be more beneficial, as it allows more time to delve deeper into the issues at hand. However, ultimately, the decision is up to you and what you feel comfortable with. Whether you choose a 50-minute session or an extended 75-minute session, know that I am here to support you every step of the way.

Some clients may feel more comfortable with a therapy process that involves walking with their therapist instead of sitting face-to-face. This approach can be healing for nature lovers and individuals who think best while on the move, allowing them to engage with their environment mindfully. Additionally, this therapy method can stimulate creativity and fresh perspectives, making it easier for clients to work through complex issues.
It's important to note that there is less control over the environment when outdoors. The therapy session may be interrupted by people, animals, or events. I encourage you to reach out to discuss walk-and-talk therapy and determine if it is a good fit for you. Please feel free to contact me directly at nhcounselling@protonmail.com

Maintaining confidentiality is essential in counselling as it involves sharing personal information that people often don't want others to know about. As your counsellor, I am committed to keeping your story and situation confidential, even after the end of the counselling relationship. However, for the counsellor's continued clinical development and to provide effective counselling, your counsellor may occasionally discuss some of the issues you are dealing with with a clinical supervisor or colleagues. These individuals are bound by the same confidentiality as your counsellor.
Suppose you would like your counsellor to share information with anyone outside of New Heights Counselling. In that case, we will discuss the risks and benefits of this and sign a release of information form stating what information you want to be released, to whom, and over what period.
All counsellors must follow three limitations to maintaining confidentiality. These limitations primarily concern:
There is a risk of harm or neglect to a child or vulnerable/dependent adult.
If a counsellor believes you are at risk of harming yourself or another person.
To comply with legal requirements such as requests from ICBC or WorkSafe BC.
If I have one of the above concerns and confidentiality must be breached, I will communicate with you first.
